Hannya
You are looking at a very unusual and hard to find Danitrio Grand Maki-e "Warai-Hannya" (The Sneering Demon) with 18kt M Nib. This piece is made by master Maki-e artist Mr. Masahiro Takagi. The pen is limited to 30 pieces world wide. The pen is brand new with box and paper. Dunhill-Namiki many years ago also had a pen made with the same subject. Now a bit about the unusual Maki-e subject:
Hannya, a horned demoness that symbolizes frightfulness and bewitchery, is usually represented by a tenacious woman who has been transformed into a ghost that seeks revenge for losing her lover to a rival. Jealous rage and extreme sorrow embodies the spirit of Hannya. Many ghost stories are told about Hannya. The design, Warai-Hannya is drawn from these old stories, and the painting is derived from the work of Katsushita Hokusai, who painted Hyaku-Monogatari, "100 Ghost Tales", of which only five have survived. The ghost tales were popular in old Japan from 1603 - 1867. The stories were told at parties held at midnight. A hundred candles would be lit, and after each tale was told, a lit candle would be put out, until all 100 candles were extinguished.
Triangle gold flakes are set by hand to make the ground a pattern to symbolize a demon. Four different kinds of the triangular gold flakes were used. The Taka Maki-e and Shishiai Taka-age method were used to pain the demon.
If you are sick and tired of the usual Maki-e of birds and flowers, and want something bolder than the Namiki Shark, here it is.
