You are looking at a hard to find brand new, uninked, Danitrio Grand Maki-e "Shakkyo" (Stone Bridge) With 18kt M Nib. The pen is done by master Maki-e artist Mr. Kenji Yamamoto who also did Krone's famous "Shogun". The pen is a cartridge/converter filler, and limited to 50 pens world wide. This pen is numbered 11 of 50. Now a bit about the unusual Maki-e theme.
Shakkyo, or Stone Bridge, the theme is based on an ancient Japanese Noh play. The story retells a Japanese buddhist monk named Shakusho came to the foot fo Mt. Seiryo in China during the Tang Dynasty, and sees a stone bridge. When he is about to cross the stone bridge, he was stopped by a child of the mountain who tells him that the mysterious stone bridge was built by nature, leading to Paradise. It was made only a foot wide and 300 feet long but full of glassy moss and it was hung about 10,000 feet above the hell-like valley below. Nobody would be able to cross the bridge without the help of gods. However, at the other end of this bridge is the Paradise of Monju Bosatsu Jodo, "The Buddhist Paradise". The child says that there will be flowers falling from the sky and mysterious music and miracles there. He told him to wait for a while, and disappears. Then, the Lion of the Budhist comes to the bridge and dances for peace and happiness for the world. The Lion Dancing is the main event in this Noh Play.
Techniques used: Taka Maki-e was extensively used on this design. Hundreds of Kirikane Chrashi (rectangular gold flakes) and Marugane Chirashi (round shape gold flakes) were set by hand, along with the beautiful Raden. This is really an unusual bold Maki-e. If you are sick and tired of the usual Maki-e of flowers, and animals, this one is for you.
